Georgina Howard – Season 01 / Ep 07
Runs and bikes and beach,

There’s a clue to the character of my friend Georgina, a name no-one uses for George, in the preamble to her choice of ‘quote…’ reproduced below. She mentions ‘not being smart enough to quote from an academic’. Like all humans, or the interesting ones anyway, George is a mass of conflicting and competing traits and beliefs. She is smart. She comes across as self-assured and confident, but of course most of us have our facades and our necessary armour to get through this ‘short time we have been given’ as she so appositely notes.
George is married to my best friend Glenn. I’ve known Glenn since we were 5, so why George and not him. Well, as George would be quick to point out, she and I are now ‘mates’ too, and anyway, Glenn’s time will come!
Our interview was, I feel, slow to get off the ground, but that was down to the lack of skill of the interviewer rather than the ability to communicate of the subject. I have much to learn! What I hope does come through as the interview relaxes into its natural cadence is the easy friendship George and I enjoy, and the victories she has had in dealing with what has not always been an easy life.
Like several of my astronauts, she has been almost apologetic in telling me some of her choices of music. But look at the list! I mean, some total classics, even if American Pie drives me mad. Thanks George, you’re a sweet soul and beautiful heart.

1) Extreme, More than Words (00:16:09)
I loved the rawness of the vocals and the guitar, and it was a song that I loved to sing to.
2) The Church, Under the Milky Way (00:37:39)
I listened to this as a kid in my brother’s bedroom and it brings back happy memories of hanging out in his room and my idyllic childhood.
3) Don Mclean, American Pie (01:01:20)
Another song I loved to sing to, I listened to this on my journey around Central Australia on a school trip when I was 16 years old.
4) Van Morrison, Moondance (01:24:24)
I always loved listening to Van Morrison, this song in particular I loved when I was a teenager, and I ended up having it as my wedding dance.
5) Nat King Cole, L-O-V-E (01:42:44)
Always loved the deep vocals of Nat King Cole – wanted this as my wedding song, but apparently the dance moves were too technical, so said my dance instructor!
6) Guns N Roses, You Could be Mine (01:58:51)
I used to listen to this with my brother when we first got our licenses. We drove our shared Suzuki Vitara together, singing and strumming along to it.
7) Pearl Jam, Jeremy (02:28:02)
I used to listen to this song on my own when I was driving my Suzuki Vitara, and felt so cool with the music up loud and the windows wide open!

That is an incredibly tough question as I have read so many books over the years. There are 2 that I have read more that 5 times though – Kane and Abel by Jeffrey Archer and Born to Run by Christopher McDonald.

Something tranquil, like Spanish guitar or a Hotel Costes number 4 or 5 (they were the best and bring back memories of when I first started hanging out with Glenn).

I won’t try and presume I’m smart enough to quote from an academic, but I like to go by my own mantra that life is too short to deal with drama, enjoy what you have on this earth for the short time we have been given.
